Is National Pharmacy Technician Certification required?


Texas has been requiring it as of January 2001, and other states are following, so why not be prepared before your state requires you to take the exam and obtain Certification credentials?

Is this a one-time exam, or will I have to take it again to keep my Certification current?


Someone who passes the test only has to take it once, IF they obtain 20 credit hours of continuing education (CE) over a two year period. If the tech does not get this CE, then his/her certification expires after the two-year period and the only way to become re-certified is to retake and re-pass the exam.

Is there a salary increase for a certified Pharmacy Technician?

According to a 2000 PTCB survey, "almost 70% of employers give technicians who pass the PTCE a raise."

What is the pay scale for Certified Pharmacy Technicians?


According to a recent PTCB survey, there is great variation in pharmacy technician salaries so we are hesitant to comment upon this issue. We will, however, relate to you that this PTCB survey noted that 65% of certified pharmacy technicians are paid between $9.00 and $20.00 per hour.

What qualifications must one have in order to become a Certified Pharmacy Technician?


The PTCB states that an applicant must have a high school diploma or GED and no felony convictions.  The applicant must then sit for and pass the national Pharmacy Technician Certification Examination (PTCE).
